Frieze Art Fair 2009, Regents Park (15-18 October)

The most glamorous and coolest international contemporary art fair in the world is back in Regent’s Park. For its seventh edition, it presents 165 of the world’s most exciting galleries and new work by over 1,000 artists. Chic-Londres had a preview on Wednesday 14th.

Did you know?

  • Frieze was started in 2003 by Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp, founders in 1991 of Frieze magazine.
  • It presents 165 galleries from 30 countries, exhibiting new work by over 1,000 artists, including Gilbert and George, Tracey Emin, John Baldessari, Gary Hume and Marc Quinn, to name a few.
  • It has become one of the highlights of the British cultural and social calendar, and has helped to establish London as the capital of contemporary art in Europe, if not the world.
  • Over 60,000 visitors attend the fair every year, including major curators and art collectors but also members of the general public who enjoy the experience of a cultural day out.
  • It takes place in Regent’s Park in a large contemporary structure of 21,000 square metres designed by renowned architects Caruso St John.

Why go there?

  • For the chance to have a snapshot at the best contemporary art in the world, in one single space.
  • To experience its atmosphere and energy, further enhanced by the fact that its bespoke structure benefits from natural light source, avoiding the atmosphere of a trade show and thus making the fair more lively.
  • Because ithas managed to maintain a real sense of fun and accessibility , which makes it less intimidating than some another art fairs or galleries.
  • Because the fair also presents a curated programme of talks, artists’ commissions and film projects, many of which are interactive and encourage visitors to engage with art and artists directly.
  • Because even children can have some fun, with workshops for 5-12 year olds on Saturday and Sunday.
