Summer Trend: How to Wear your Underwear as Outerwear

Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore -and of course Lady Gaga!- are all showing off their underwear this season, with lingerie emerging as the new must-have and must-see fashion accessory in the catwalk, from Dior to Stella McCartney to Givenchy. If you want to work this look but don’t want to be like an extra in Moulin Rouge, Chic-Londres got some must-follow tips from Nicky Clayton, Rigby & Peller’s Creative Director.
  • Make sure you avoid sheer fabrics: when it comes to wearing your lingerie as outerwear, then coverage is best. Satin appears much more elegant, while being a glam evening look.
  • Stick to neutral colours such as pale pink, ivory, taupe, beige and of course black, which is always a great option. Avoid acid bright colours, red and hot pink: the aim is to look sexy but elegant, not vulgar.
  • Chiffon trims are a great way to incorporate this trend into your look, by showing off some delicate details, such as the Rigby & Peller Vintage ivory chiffon balcony bra (see photo), which has straps and a bow back are made to be seen.
  • High Waisted 50’s style knickers as seen on Lady Gaga are still around and for the daring can be worn as hot pant style shorts. Team them with hosiery to avoid showing too much leg.
  • 80’s style corset top is also set to be big and an underwear basque is a great way to tap into the trend, especially since basques are boned on the body so flatten the tummy and give everyone the perfect hourglass waist.
